    Efficiency vs. effectiveness
Have technologies made us more efficient or like hamsters on a wheel, desperately trying to stay on top of our many lines of digital communications? Perhaps what we should be asking ourselves is not how do we become more efficient, but how do we become more effective.
Scrap everything you know about creating strong passwords—and do this instead
Never mind, says the man who declared in 2003 that strong passwords are a combination of letters, symbols, and numbers, changed every 90 days. The now 72 year old admitted he was rushed to devise the rules with little supporting empirical research. He had only one research paper from the 1980s to rely on. Oops. Now there is loads of empirical research, and it says—just go for long, easy-to-remember phrases. And change it only if there’s been a sign of breach. Read More »

TLV Economy: September 6, 2017 | Summer Doldrums?

“In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.”
    - Robert Frost

“The truth is what you want to believe.” That’s what we wrote about the economy in March. Donald Trump had recently started his term as president. Many in the private sector had great optimism that a Washington outsider would shift economic policy to inspire greater economic, job and wage growth.
We’re now seven months into a Trump presidency, and it appears very little has changed. Although last quarter GDP growth has been revised up to 3%, several economic indicators suggest we still have a struggling economy. We’re back to employment growth falling short of expectations. The BLS’ reported 156K job gains for August is masked by a decrease in the average workweek from 34.5 to 34.4 hours. If you calculated the job loses from the average workweek loss, we mathematically lost a total of 200K jobs in August. Less work…fewer jobs.

May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”

The roaring sentiment increase after Trump’s election is subsiding somewhat while America’s organic economy continues to muddle its way forward. Car sales are weak, but housing sales are picking up. Construction activity is steady. Wages are trying to rise while consumption still seems dependent on growing consumer debt. Job growth continues at a worthwhile pace.
The stock market rise has made the bulls happy while the bears seem ever more bearish. For the bears, stocks were too high before Trump was elected. Now they are even higher. And real estate in all the coastal geographies is benefiting from foreign capital that still seems to view the U.S. as the world’s safest harbor and quite possibly its most dynamic and sustainable economy.

TLV Deep Dive: Outsmarting Our Smartphones

"Life is what happens when your cell phone is charging."
    - Unknown

Smartphones: The Cigarettes of the 21st Century
In the 1990s, a U.S. study, and later one in the U.K., found that cigarette companies were “engineering” cigarettes to be more addictive, a claim the tobacco industry vehemently denied. The U.K. findings listed the following additives and effects:
    - “Additives are used to make cigarettes that provide high levels of 'free' nicotine, which increases the addictive kick of the product
    - Additives are used to enhance the taste of tobacco smoke
    - Sweeteners and chocolate are used to make cigarettes more palatable to children
    - Eugenol and menthol are added to numb the throat to mask the aggravating effects of tobacco smoke
    - Additives such as cocoa are used to dilate the airways allowing the smoke an easier and deeper passage into the lungs
    - Additives are used to mask the smell and visibility of smoke that is not breathed in by the smoker”

As recently as the mid 1990s, tobacco industry executives were trying to convince us—and a Congressional panel—that cigarettes are not addictive. A Congressional hearing had been called in response to then new research linking nicotine to addiction and cigarettes to several diseases, prompting a rising tide of anti-smoking sentiment.

TLV: This Year's Best Graduation Speeches

they will win all the battles for you."
    - Secretary of Defense General James Mattis, on ledearthip to West Point graduates

    James Mattis at West Point
As far as commencement speeches go, few are more humbling than those delivered to West Point graduates. Most of us graduated into relatively sheltered circumstances in a dangerous world. These young adults willingly graduate into that dangerous world so that we may remain relatively sheltered.
Secretary of Defense General James Mattis—who personifies humble confidence—speaks of what leadership must look like in the military, but we can all benefit from his wisdom. “If your troops make mistakes,” Mattis says to these soldiers, “look in the mirror and figure out how to coach them better.”

After Trump’s election, a few well respected CEOs and investors suggested the country’s animal spirits could be ignited. This was reflected in euphoric post election economic sentiment surveys. Since Trump has taken office, sentiment has declined slightly, but still remains strong.
Optimistic that Trump the Washington outsider and Trump the businessman would stimulate the economy through improved economic and tax policy fueled rising sentiment. But so far, the Trump administration has been stuck in the swamp, unable to move forward with neither health care nor tax policy improvements.
