    Bureau of Labor Statistics on Employment: Good job growth, poor wage growth

    (February 3, 2017) Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 227,000 in January 2016, the most in four months, but wage growth slowed more than projected. Job gains occurred in retail trade (46K), construction (36K), and financial activities (32K). The unemployment rate was little changed at 4.8%. Average workweek, 34.4 hours, was little changed from December. The change in total nonfarm payroll employment was revised down by 39,000 jobs for November and December. Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 3 cents to $26, following a 6-cent increase in December. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.5%.
    Conference Board Help Wanted Online Index: Smaller increase in January
    (February 1, 2017) Following the small December gain of 74,000, online advertised job vacancies recorded an even smaller gain of 49,000 in January 2017. Since reaching a peak in November of 2015 of 5,547,138, online job listings have fallen to the current 4,850,500. The December supply/demand ratio stands at 1.57 unemployed persons for each advertised vacancy, with a total of 2.7 million more unemployed workers than the number of advertised vacancies.  Read More »

    Bureau of Labor Statistics on Employment: Below expectations, but up
    (January 6, 2017) Compared to median expectations of 174,000, total nonfarm payroll employment fell short, but did rise by 156,000 in December 2016. The unemployment rate was relatively unchanged at 4.7%. Health care and social assistance (63,000) led job growth, followed by food service and drinking places (30,000). Revisions to the two previous months added 19,000 new jobs.
    Total 2016 employment growth of 2.16 million was below the 2015 rate of 2.7 million. The labor force participation rate, at 62.7%, changed little in December and was little changed during 2016. Total unemployment stands at 7.5 million.  Read More »
